California Self-Employed Health Insurance

S O L O   O R   W I T H   S T A F F

There are several considerations for the self-employed "solo" person to obtain affordable self-employed health insurance and Insurance Advisors is ready to provide you the best guidance available.  Self employed health insurance plans can be found using any of the following:

HSA - Health Savings Accounts

Individual Plans With High Deductibles

Group Coverage When Applicable

 HSA - Health Savings Account

HSA's were developed by the government to help provide low cost health insurance for self-employed persons. HSA's are one of the more popular California self-employed health insurance plans.

According to the IRA ... an HSA is a tax-exempt trust or custodial account established exclusively for the purpose of paying qualified medical expenses of the account beneficiary who, for the months for which contributions are made to an HSA, is covered under a high deductible health plan (HDHP).

In simpler language, a health savings account (HSA) is like a bank account that works with your individual health plan.  As money is added to your health savings account, you can use it to pay for most health care expenses.

Examples of what you might use your savings for include the money you may need to pay before your plan begins to make payments - called deductible - or for medical expenses not covered by your health plan such as dental, counseling, etc.

If you don't spend all of the money
in your health savings account, the remaining balance rolls over to the following year.  You don't lose any money that you don't spend.

*Note: An individual who contributes $1,000 each year starting in 2007 and makes catch-up contributions can accumulate $23,000 after 10 years, $47,000 after 20 years, $81,000 after 30 years, and $127,000 after 40 years.

Individual and Group Policies
For Self-Employed
- "solo" or with staff?

Individual Health Insurance plans are often the only solution for the "solo" self-employed individual. Plans do exist that offer affordable self-employed health insurance. A high deductible with more out of pocket expenses are usually required, but therefore the plans become more affordable for catastrophic needs.

Also individual plans work well with an HSA, as discussed in the above paragraph.  Insurance Advisors is happy to explore suitable options for your medical and budgetary requirements.

Group health insurance plans can work for you as well, since so many of the self-employed do not qualify for individual coverage, due to pre-existing conditions.  No one can be denied for pre-existing conditions with a group health insurance policy.

The following new "group" qualifiers can provide low cost health insurance for self-employed persons.

  • All carriers are now offering true group policies to husband/wife groups.

  • 1099 and Independent Contractors are eligible for group coverage if they have some W-2 employees in their company.

Insurance Advisors is well experienced in identifying affordable health insurance for individual needs.  Contact us today if you are looking for a self-employed health insurance plan.
