What is A Medicare Supplement / Medigap Plan?

A Medicare Supplement or Medigap plan is an insurance policy designed to pay for certain healthcare expenses not covered by Medicare Part A and Part B. - deductibles, copayments and coinsurance amounts.

There are ten standardized Medicare Supplement plans (Plans A through N). The ten plans vary in their benefits and deductibles that can be seen in detail on our Medicare Supplement Plan page. They are provided by private insurance companies.

All 10 plans offer coverage for “core benefits,” meaning hospitalization, blood, and your 20% co-insurance for outpatient medical services such as doctor visits. Other plans also offer coverage to help pay your Part A or B deductible, Part B “excess” charges (the amount your doctor may charge above the Medicare approved limits), your portion of the bill for skilled nursing, medical care while traveling outside of the U.S., at home recovery, and preventative care.

Prescription Drug coverage is not allowed to be part of a Medigap  plan even though Medigap plans always have more benefits than Medicare Part A and Part B. Prescription drug coverage can be added through a stand-alone Medicare Part D plan

Contact me and let's discuss the 10 Medigap plans per your needs and your budget. Know that Medigap plans can be changed according to needs as well.

Hnow To Choose Your Medigap Coverage

Price is always a consideration. Although the 10 standardized Medigap plans have the same benefits regardless of the insurance company that provides the policy or the state in which you reside ... their prices are not. For example, Plan F might vary in cost from one insurance company  than Plan F from a 2nd health insurance company in the same state.

When comparing to a Medicare Advantage Plan:
Medigap plans fill in the gaps not covered by Medicare A & B.
Medicare Advantage includes Medicare A & B coverage plus.
Medigap plans do not include prescription drugs.
Medicare Advantage includes Prescription drug coverage.

Knowing your needs as well as your choices. This is when having an informed insurance broker is important.  Read the benefit descriptions of each Medigap Plan. Be certain to look at:

Monthly Premium
Deductibles
Doctor and Healthcare Facility Restrictions
Benefits
Anticipated cost of each plan based upon your history of health care and hospitalization needs.
Prescription drug coverage cost sharing as it relates to your medication usage.
When Do You First Sign Up For A Medigap or Medicare Supplement Plan?

Medigap initial open enrollment is the six months beginning when you are first covered under Medicare Part B medical insurance. Changes in Medigap Plans can be made within the yearly open enrollment period  from Oct 15th to December 7th. Also, The California Birthday Rule allows you to make changes to your Medigap coverage in your Birthday month.
